Universities are called to play a fundamental role in this "knowledge intensive society" in which we are immersed. A more dynamic society than ever before, where the capacity to adapt becomes more and more necessary. In order to adapt successfully, it seems essential that what is needed is a mediated and tiered reorientation of our capabilities towards the necessities of tomorrow.

The Universitat Politècnica de València is an institution with the capacity to take a lead in these changes and the meeting of the demands which face us, characteristics which underline its great value but which also mean the adoption of specific organisational and functional processes, all of which justified the need to draw up a new Strategic Plan, as a tool for the management of the institution, the definition of lines of action, and to support decision-making.

Planning guarantees flexibility in the face of change, a guarantee of coherent evolution, both for our own internal operations and equally to ask of society what we consider fair for the University. If we are to request in a coherent way the role which the University deserves to play and the treatment it must receive, it requires that each and every one of its members puts in the day to day effort, in order to do a good job to the best of our abilities.

The 2015-2020 Strategic Plan was drawn up in two phases: firstly, the mission, vision and shared values of the university community, which must characterise our institution, were specified; secondly, a strategy concerning the basis of the challenges and projects was defined, duly accompanied by the deadlines and timescales and by a framework of responsibility and indicators connected to its accomplishment, all of this to ensure that it is in line with the corresponding annual budget.

It is conceived with a philosophy of continual review. It is a dynamic document which will be revised each year, and which specifies the schedule of action for each year, given that both the institution and the society it serves are immersed in a permanent process of change, which will no doubt alter the current circumstances in which the Plan was developed.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and congratulations to all those people who actively collaborated in the development of our Strategic Plan, especially to the members of the Committee. Their interest and their constant show of tenacity for the work and of conviction to its objectives have transmitted to all of us an excitement and enthusiasm for this decisive project.

Throughout the process we have sought to ensure that this would not be considered as just the strategic plan of the rectorate team, but of everybody who is part of the university community as agents of the same and of all those who feel in one way or another a link with the Universitat Politècnica de València and aspire to improve it to the benefit of society as a whole.

UPF is a public, internationally recognised, research-intensive university with three campuses located in the heart of Barcelona.
UPF was founded in 1990 with the aim of providing top quality education. Over the years, it has also experienced substantial growth in research thanks to its policy, from the start, of recruiting top international talent. The results of this strategy can be seen in UPF’s excellent research indicators, including the number of EU-funded projects and the quality of its scientific productivity. For instance, UPF ranks among the top 20 European universities with the largest number of competitive projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC, 2015).

Today, UPF is both a specialized university with a unique teaching model and a cutting-edge research institution in three closely related fields of knowledge:
the social sciences and humanities (Ciutadella campus),
communication and information technologies (Poblenou campus),
and the health and life sciences (Mar campus).

With over 40,000 students and more than 9,000 employees, the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) is the largest institution of research and education in Denmark. The purpose of the University – to quote the University Statute – is to ’conduct research and provide further education to the highest academic level’.

Approximately one hundred different institutes, departments, laboratories, centres, museums, etc., form the nucleus of the University, where professors, lecturers and other academic staff, as well as most of the technical and administrative personnel, carry out their daily work, and where teaching takes place.

These activities take place in various environments ranging from the plant world of the Botanical Gardens, through high-technology laboratories and auditoriums, to the historic buildings and lecture rooms of central Copenhagen.
